Why Focal Length Matters for the Perfect Portrait
Have you ever taken a selfie and felt like your features looked slightly "off"? You’re likely seeing lens distortion. Wide-angle lenses (like the ones on most smartphones) tend to stretch things out, often making features closest to the camera appear larger than they are.
In the studio, I prefer working with longer focal lengths, specifically 85mm or higher. Here is why:
- Compression: Longer lenses "compress" the image, which is incredibly flattering for facial features. It brings everything into a natural, beautiful balance.
- The "Bokeh" Effect: That creamy, blurred-out background that makes the subject pop? That’s a hallmark of a high-quality long lens.
- Comfortable Distance: Using a longer lens allows for a bit of physical space between the camera and the subject, which often helps people feel more relaxed and less "on the spot."
